About Julie Jakmides
Julie is a litigation attorney in northeast Ohio who practices law with her father and is building a practice in family law, personal injury (wrongful death, car crashes), civil/business disputes, real property, municipal/government law, and anything that involves an insurance adjuster or claim. Julie spent nearly 4 terms on Alliance City Council, and when not spending time with her two young daughters and Golden Retriever Otis, she enjoys working on political campaigns.
Blue Ocean: Tell us about your professional life. Why did you chose to work in this industry?
Julie: I have always identified with being an advocate. From the time I was on an elementary school playground, I admired my dad’s professional career helping people with their problems and standing up for them. I enjoy public speaking and I can think quickly on my feet, so being a litigation attorney suits me very well.
Blue Ocean: What does your typical day look like?
Julie: Every day is different, and that is something I love about my career. I am usually in court 3-4 times per week, but those courtrooms could be anywhere across a 5+ county area, and all the way from municipal court to the federal level. Part of my day is always consumed by returning phone calls and touching base with clients, and I spent a decent amount of time doing legal research and drafting my own filings in between court appearances.
Blue Ocean: What is one trend from your industry that excites you?
Julie: Embracing technology. Our courts are consistently investing in infrastructure that levels the playing field for parties without means, and also enables attorneys to do more work in less time.
Blue Ocean: How have you differentiated yourself and what underpins your success?
Julie: I am demographically differentiated because I am young and female in an older, male-dominated industry, but I have defined by professional reputation by blending my personal experience with my background in politics and government. I do my own research and writing and I never let an opposing party know a case better than I do.
Blue Ocean: What is something unique you offer your clients?
Julie: I dive head-first into my cases. I am happy to spend whatever time is necessary getting to know my clients so I can understand how best to resolve their legal problems, and hopefully lighten their load on a personal level too.
Blue Ocean: What advice would you give your younger self?
Julie: Just keep going. I hit a few personal bumps while in law school and shortly thereafter, and I spent many hours contemplating if I could make a legal career happen. The persistence it took to get to the place I am today has been well worth the struggles.
Blue Ocean: What is something you are grateful for?
Julie: My family and my community. But for the support of my parents and my “village” that includes everything from neighbors to teachers to the alumni networks I belong to, I would be not be able to juggle a thriving professional career while also supporting my two young daughters.
Blue Ocean: What are your sources of happiness and inspiration?
Julie: My daughters – no question. They are the absolute light in my life. I find tremendous purpose and satisfaction with what I do professionally, but at the end of the day they are my reasons why I am able to do what I do.
Blue Ocean: Outside of work, what passions or interests do you pursue?
Julie: I enjoy working on political campaigns. I consider myself a very moderate Republican, but align myself with candidates who share my community ideals and world-view regardless of strict partisanship. I also love travel and having a great meal with an even better bottle of dry red wine.
